Stop the Data Breaches

BUSINESS INSIDER — The Atlanta-based fast-food chain Chick-Fil-A is working with IT security companies after a possible data breach may have leaked the credit-card details of 9,000 customers.

WALL STREET JOURNAL — Target Corp. said Friday that personal information, including names, mailing addresses, and phone numbers, of some additional 70 million customers were stolen during a data breach at the retailer over the holidays.

REUTERS/HUFFINGTON POST — Office equipment supplier Staples Inc said the investigation of a data security breach showed that malware may have affected about 1.16 million payment cards. The breach at 115 of the company’s 1,400 stores was announced in October. Staples said it has since eradicated the malware.

FORTUNE — Women’s retailer latest to be stung by a cyberattack. Bebe Stores has confirmed a data breach hit the women’s retailer’s payments system over a two-and-a-half week period last month, the latest retailer stung by an attack that focused on obtaining payment card information.

NEW YORK TIMES — In the latest cyberattack on American retailers and restaurants, both Kmart and Dairy Queen said their computer systems were compromised in security intrusions involving customers’ credit and debit card information.

BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK — Supervalu Inc. and the operator of the Albertsons supermarket chain, which both suffered data breaches this year, said they discovered additional attacks in the computer networks that process card payments.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE — Jimmy John’s said it has learned of a data breach involving credit and debit card data at 216 of its locations, including four in Chicago and more than a dozen in the suburbs. The Champaign-based sandwich chain said it learned of the breach July 30 and is investigating. Jimmy John’s said it believes that an intruder stole login credentials to remotely access cash register systems.

FORBES — Home Depot the nation’s largest home improvement retailer, confirmed Monday afternoon that its payment data systems have been breached. The confirmation comes less than a week after the retailer first disclosed the possibility of a breach.

FORBES — After a month and a half of investigation, Goodwill announced on Wednesday that 330 of its stores in 20 states were impacted by a credit card breach, in which an estimated 868,000 cards were compromised.

CNN — United Parcel Service has discovered a computer breach at 51 stores, making Big Brown the latest retailer to lose customer data. UPS said that the hacking had escaped detection at stores in 24 states, or around 1% of its locations. At most stores, the malware attack occurred after March 26, and was eliminated by August 11.
